Rok 1920. Wietnam staje się kolonią francuską. Cuong jest agentem tajnej jednostki, powołanej przez Francuzów do walki z rosnącą w siłę wietnamską partyzantką. Z czasem mężczyzna zaczyna coraz bardziej dostrzegać okrucieństwa popełniane przez wojska rządowe. Wzięcie do niewoli pięknej Thuy, córki domniemanego komendanta partyzantów, zmusza go do rewizji własnej postawy. Cuong dezerteruje, zabierając ze sobą dziewczynę. Między uciekinierami rodzi się uczucie.
„The Rebel”- to najdroższy i zarazem największy komercyjny sukces wietnamskiej kinematografii.
